DOOMBRINGER MANTLE

JACKET - HELLBOY

SERIAL: J005
TIME TO CREATE: 6 Wekks
OWNER: Ariel Reed

Do you ever have a project that just seems to cool to be real?

I can fully say that with Doombringer Mantle, it is very real. The first non-denim project I’ve worked on, this jacket is a mixture of a canvas blend and pure badass.

Starting with those studs, (I called them Rollo studs) across the shoulder. The studs add so much weight to the jacket, my model almost looks like he’s shrugging the jacket off in the pics. But in all honesty, its just that heavy. He was a real trooper taking those pics with me in a blizzard. Thanks, Andrew.

I think my favorite part of this jacket is the arm. When I had the idea for what I wanted to do, I needed to incorporate Hellboy’s signature stone-arm into it. That involved building an arm from scratch and sewing it into the jacket. Needless to say, it was quite the job. But I was able to handle it.

Unfortunately, the total time on this jacket took much longer than I would have liked. Racking in at a month and a half, and all of it was due to the back patch. The initial back patch was to be made out of a shirt with an original Mike Mignola piece. Sadly, after 1 month of shipping through Russia only to have the shirt be super pixelated and made of horrific grade cotton, I had to think of something. Thankfully, I was able to grab this awesome Hellboy shirt that matched the motif and went with that. I think it came together well.

Lastly: The hieroglyphs. The jacket’s owner, Ariel, wanted something Egyptian thrown on it. Not knowing if Hellboy ever had an Egyptian adventure, I hand sketched some of her favorites and tried to give it a feel like they belonged on the jacket.

This was a fun piece and inspired me to go big or go home with my project: CHAOS ENVOY. Thank you Ariel! I hope you enjoy.
